AUTHORSHIP OF THE FOURTH GOSPEL
This is the traditional author of the Fourth Gospel, one of Jesus' Twelve Disciples. He is the youngest of the Disciples and his older brother James is also one of the Twelve. The two brothers were Galilean fishermen who became followers of John the Baptist, then left to follow Jesus instead.
According to tradition, John's brother James was the first of the Disciples to be martyred, but John lived to a ripe old age in Ephesus (in modern Turkey) and died in 98 CE. This would make him in the right place and time to write the Fourth Gospel which is named after him (although the Gospel never claims to be written by 'John').

This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true - John 21: 24
