CHALLENGING COSMOLOGICAL ARGUMENTS
In the Bible, Jesus walks on water and his disciple Peter briefly walks on water too, until he loses confidence and starts to sink. Jesus criticises him, calling him "you of little faith". But Peter's doubts were perfectly reasonable. Walking on water is very improbable. Religious faith is about going "beyond the evidence" - it is what Kierkegaard calls a "leap of (or to) faith". But you don't get this from the Cosmological Arguments.

In other ways, this is a bad thing. The "Big Bang" Theory is the current scientific model for the origin of the universe, but it might not stay that way. There are other theories that might gain support and become more popular, like ekpyrotic theory, multiverse theory, steady state theory and the "cold bang".
This makes the Argument from Contingency and the KCA rather precarious: they are supported today, but might lose support tomorrow. It's not easy to base religious faith on something so shaky. |
